GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro® and Zepbound® have helped many people manage diabetes and achieve significant weight loss. However, summer brings unique challenges for people taking these medications. Heat, travel, dehydration and changes in eating patterns can sometimes increase side effects or affect how medications are stored.

Whether you're heading out on vacation, spending time by the pool, or simply trying to stay cool in the summer heat, taking a GLP-1 medication can come with a few extra considerations.  Aspen Ralph, DO, Senior Medical Director at Bookmark Medical, shares some practical tips for managing common concerns like dehydration, nausea, and medication storage so you can enjoy the season while staying on track with your health goals.

How Should You Store GLP-1 Medications During Summer Travel?

Proper medication storage is especially important when traveling in hot weather.

"Summer temperatures can quickly rise inside a vehicle, even when it doesn't feel particularly hot outside," says Dr. Ralph. "Protecting your medication from extreme heat helps ensure it remains effective."

When traveling by car, Dr. Ralph recommends:

  • Using a small, insulated medication travel case or cooler

  • Keeping the medication in the air-conditioned cabin rather than the trunk or glove compartment

  • Avoiding direct contact between the medication and ice packs to prevent freezing

  • Taking the medication with you if you'll be away from the vehicle for an extended period

Can Summer Heat Increase the Risk of Dehydration?

Yes. Dehydration can become a concern for anyone during hot weather, but people taking GLP-1 medications may be at greater risk because these medications can reduce appetite and, in some cases, decrease the sensation of thirst.

Unfortunately, early signs of dehydration are sometimes easy to overlook.

Common symptoms include:

  • Dry mouth

  • Increased thirst

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue or sluggishness

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Muscle cramps

  • Less frequent urination

  • Dark-colored urine

  • Dry or cool skin

"Many people assume symptoms like fatigue, headaches, or dizziness are simply side effects of the medication or the heat," says Dr. Ralph. "In reality, they may be early signs that the body needs more fluids."

Does Hot Weather Make GLP-1 Nausea Worse?

For some patients, yes.

Nausea is one of the most common side effects of GLP-1 medications, and summer heat can make it more noticeable. According to Dr. Ralph, several factors contribute to this:

  • Increased fluid loss through sweating

  • Heat-related stress on the body

  • Reduced appetite

  • Slower stomach emptying associated with GLP-1 medications

"When dehydration and heat exposure occur together, mild nausea can become more persistent and uncomfortable," Dr. Ralph explains.

How Can You Manage GLP-1 Nausea During the Summer?

The key is addressing symptoms early before they worsen.

Dr. Ralph recommends taking the following steps when nausea develops:

  1. Cool Down Quickly- Move indoors to an air-conditioned space or find shade as soon as possible.

  1. Sip Fluids Slowly- Rather than drinking large amounts of water at once, take small, frequent sips of water or an electrolyte-containing beverage.

  1. Choose Lighter Foods- Hot weather and heavy meals can be a difficult combination when nausea is already present.

Consider:

  • Chilled or room-temperature foods

  • Bland foods that are easy to digest

  • Smaller meals eaten more frequently throughout the day

  1. Adjust Meal Timing- Many patients find they tolerate food better during cooler parts of the day. "Try planning larger meals for the morning or evening rather than during the hottest afternoon hours," Dr. Ralph advises.

  1. Stay Ahead of Hydration- Don't rely solely on thirst as your guide. "Because some patients may not feel thirsty even when they're becoming dehydrated, it can help to follow a hydration schedule and take regular sips throughout the day," says Dr. Ralph.

Summer Safety Tips for People Taking GLP-1 Medications

Whether you're heading on vacation, spending time outdoors, or simply navigating a hot summer season, a few preventive measures can make a big difference:

  • Carry water with you throughout the day

  • Consider an electrolyte beverage during prolonged outdoor activities

  • Take breaks in air-conditioned environments when possible

  • Monitor for signs of dehydration

  • Store medications properly when traveling

  • Eat smaller meals if nausea becomes an issue

  • Seek medical advice if symptoms become severe or persistent
